JOANNE COOKE has had a lifelong interest in line, form, and movement. She often begins her ink drawings by making a random stroke, then builds the piece around what the line suggests to her. The results are both imaginative and whimsical.

With a natural affinity for drawing and painting beginning in early childhood, Joanne was awarded scholarships to Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles while in high school and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from Otis College of Art and Design.

She has taught drawing at the Los Angeles County Art Museum, at Hollywood High School, and at Studio One in Oakland, and has worked as a graphic artist and illustrator for television stations in the Los Angeles area, as well as for colorful stints illustrating for Frederick’s of Hollywood and painting faces on mannequins.

In addition to her visual art endeavors, Joanne was one of the San Francisco Bay Area’s prominent flamenco dancers for thirty years, using the performing name Sara Ayala, and continues to teach flamenco dance.
